Two Student Assistants Needed for a Project on Non-Target Arthropods in Organic Apple Cultivation

As part of a research project, we are developing recommendations for a systemic approach to controlling the apple blossom weevil (Anthonomus pomorum) and the woolly apple aphid (Eriosoma lanigerum) in organic fruit cultivation. A key focus of the project is assessing the impact of plant protection products on functional biodiversity in orchards. For this purpose, we analyze beating tray and sweep net samples to evaluate various arthropod groups. We are looking for two motivated student assistants to support us, especially in the pre-sorting of samples. The workload will be approximately 10-14 hours per week from April to October.

Tasks

  • Pre-sorting insects from beating tray and sweep net samples
  • Differentiating insects into groups such as spiders, bugs, beetles, hymenopterans, etc.
  • Meticulous documentation of results
  • Assisting with the preparation and organization of samples and laboratory materials
  • Possibly support in field data collection

Requirements

  • You are studying Landscape Ecology, Agarwissenschaften, Biology, or a related field.
  • The samples are large and contain many insects, so structured and patient work is essential.
  • Prior experience in insect identification (e.g., through studies, internships, or as a hobby) is an advantage.
  • You are reliable and precise in your work and documentation.
  • You are flexible and can adapt to changing project requirements at short notice.

We offer:

  • An exciting and practical role in a current research project
  • Insights into organic agriculture and entomotaxonomy
  • Flexible working hours that can be easily combined with your studies
